Messerian, Levins Cap Big Year for Warrior Baseball with NCBWA All-Region Selections
Men's Baseball
5/29/09- The Warrior Baseball program finished off one of the most successful seasons in the program's history today when the NCBWA (National College Baseball Writers Association) NCAA Div. II All-East Region squad was released. Nyack placed two players, Phil Messerian (Jr., Fair Lawn, NJ) at the Utility position, and firstbaseman Cody Levins (Sr., McKinney, TX) onto the team. Their selections add to the most All-Region selections in Nyack College baseball history. Messerian was named to the 1st Team after he batted .336, third on the team, along with 28 RBI's (2nd on the team) and was 9-11 in stolen bases. He was also the Warriors top pitcher, with a 5-4 regular sason record, with 2 saves, and a 3.97 ERA. Phil also pitched a complete game victory over the NCAA East Region #1 team, Dominican, in the 2009 CACC Championship Tournament. He was 1st in the CACC in complete games (6), 4th in stikeouts (71), and 4th in innings pitched (68). Messerian was a 2009 1st Team All-CACC, 1st Team Daktronics NCAA Div. II All-East Region, All-CACC Championship Tournament and 1st Team NCCAA Div. I All-East Region selection also this year.
Levins earned his second NCBWA selection (he was picked for the 1st Team last season) by being named to the 2009 2nd Team this season. Cody was second on the team, and in the CACC, in hitting with a .395 BA. He was 1st in the CACC in on-base % (.514), 2nd in slugging % (.605), and tied for 5th in homeruns (5). He was a 2009 1st Team All-CACC, 2nd Team Daktronics NCAA Div. II All-East Region, and NCCAA Div. I All-East Region Honorable Mention selection also this year. Mysteriously, shortstop PJ Rodriguez (Jr., Levittown, PR) was left off of the NCBWA team. Rodriguez was a 2009 1st Team selection to both the Daktronics and ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. II All-East Region squads.
Both Messerian and Levins helped lead the Warriors to a 2nd place finish in the CACC, the 2009 CACC Championship Tournament semi-finals and a return to the NCCAA East Regional.
Grateful Copeland resigns from Warrior Baseball
Men's Baseball
5/26/09- Warrior Head Baseball Coach, Jon Copeland, has resigned his post to pursue another coaching opportunity; but he leaves behind a rebuilt Warrior Baseball program. "I am grateful to Nyack College for giving me this opportunity to further my Head Coaching career. I am proud of the work we were able to do here. When I came here 3 years ago the program was faltering and in bad shape. We leave it as a winning program that has become a force in the CACC, with 2 postseason appearances in a row and a return to the CACC Tournament. The cupboard is definately full for the next guy". In three seasons, and only 2 recruiting classes, Copeland produced the 2007 CACC Pitcher of the Year, the 2008 CACC Player of the Year, two NCCAA Regional appearances and a 3rd place finish in the 2009 CACC Tournament. "I have been able to go in and improve a few programs now during my career, with a lot of success. I look forward to being able to do that again".
In three seasons under Copeland the Warrior Baseball program produced 7 All-CACC selections, 5 Daktronics All-Region selections, 4 ABCA/Rawlings All-Region selctions, 4 NCBWA All-Region selections, 1 All-American, 1 pre-season All-American, and 21 NCCAA All-Region selctions; resulting in the most honored 3-year span in the program's history.
