How Tutoring Services Operate
Origin
The Academic Success Center came into physical existence in the spring
of 2001, under the guidance of Dr. Joyce Simmons, the Dean of Academic
development and its program director (then Tutor Coordinator) Beverley
Locke. Prior to the fall of 2000, the Academic Success Center, then
known as the Tutoring office, only provided tutoring in specific
classes. Today the A.S.C. offers more than one form of tutoring, the
most requested being individual sessions, a time when a student can
meet one on one with their tutor. It was also determined after some
survey of student involvement that students would also benefit from
receiving some instruction in skills as time management and study
skills through workshop and individual presentations.
Tutoring Services Philosophy
In
the tutoring Services area of the Academic Success Center, our
philosophy is to assist each student according to there specific need.
For each student who comes into the office there are several areas of
service which we provide:
- Tutor/ Tutee
- Drop-in
- Academic Skills Assessment
(Time-Management, Note-taking, Study and Test-taking skills)
- Accountability
Our goal
in this section of the ASC. is to accommodate each student based on
their specific need of assistance. Under the four categories specific
steps are taken…
How Tutoring Services Operate
- Tutor/Tutee
- Students who were recommended by a professor or who received an A+/A in a course fill out an application to tutor
- A
student can contact the ASC to request a tutor. The office is open
Monday through Thursday from 11:00am –5:00pm, 6:00pm-10:00pm and
Friday’s 9:00am-10:00am, 11:00-3:00pm
- An ASC Assistant will process a Tutor Request Form by assigning a Tutor to a Tutee that matches the course requested
- Tutor sessions are held for one hour a week inside of the ASC
- Drop-In
- A
student who can not commit to weekly tutoring sessions can drop-in on
two nights of the week for assistance in Math courses or English courses
- This
service is provided for students who decided that they only needed
assistance with one or a few questions in the two subjects of academics
- Academic Skills Assessment (Time-Management, Note-taking, Study and Test-taking skills)
- All
Students who desire assistance in this area of the Tutoring Services
take the ASC assessment which shows specific areas of problem
- The next step is a meeting with the Director of the ASC in which the students schedule is evaluated
- Accountability
- Students
referred by the First Year Studies Department are required to study in
the ASC for an agreed upon amount of hours per week
