Nyack Academic Overview
Nyack College (then the Missionary Training Institute) was granted a charter by the New York Board of Regents and the school’s curriculum was registered by the State Education Department in 1944.  In 1953 the school was authorized to confer the Bachelor of Science degree and in 1961 the Bachelor of Arts degree.  In 1960 the corporation was authorized to conduct a post-baccalaureate program (the forerunner of ATS).  Nyack College (then Nyack Missionary College) was accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1962 and in 1963 the school became a member of the American Council on Education.  Nyack’s academic programs are accredited by a number of other agencies.
   
Nyack currently offers more than 45 majors.  Undergraduate degrees include:  Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Sacred Music.  Graduate degrees include: Master of Business Administration, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Divinity, and Master of Professional Studies. 
     
The bachelor degree programs consist of 126 credit hours: 43-49 credits are from the Liberal Arts and Science Core Curriculum and 15 credits from the Bible and Ministry Minor Curriculum.

In the 1920's the college created three departments to assist in the preparation of young men and women for foreign missionary service:  Literary Department, Theological Department and Practical Department.  The college began offering a Bachelor of Theology and Bachelor of Religious Education in 1945; by 1953 the BS degree was offered and then in 1961 the BA degree.  Many majors were added over the years.  The College of Arts and Sciences was established in 2003; the College of Bible and Christian Ministry was established in 2008.

In 2008, the School of Business and School of Adult and Distance Education were combined to create the School of Business and Leadership.

The first Business degree at Nyack was offered in 1987.  Communications was added in 1992, accounting in 1997 and computer science in 1999.  The Business Department has membership in the International Business Honor Society, Sigma Beta Delta.  A Business Club, run by the students, hosts field trips and events. 
Within Business Administration, students can concentrate in Accounting, Computer Science, Economics, Finance, Human Resources, International Business, Management, Marketing, Music Business, Pre-Law and Sports Management.  The campus radio station (WNYK), video and recording studio, and film festivals provide an opportunity for students to achieve practice in the field and build a resume. Location in the New York Metropolitan area opens up the potential for internships.
      
The Adult Degree Completion Program (BS in Organizational Management) was first launched at the Nyack campus in 1989.  Classes are offered in Albany, Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Nyack, Queens, as well as Washington D.C. The Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management is designed for adults who have previously completed a minimum of 60 college credits.  An additional 60 credits are earned through designated core and elective coursework.  Of these, a maximum of 28 credits may be earned through Principles of Adult Learning—coursework that recognizes and quantifies learning and competency gained from a variety of life experiences.  In as little as 14 months, students can complete the degree program by attending class one session each week for four hours.  Students are taught in a cohort model and learn from one another as well as through text and class activities.  The overall academic program is both practical and applicable.

The Master of Business Administration was launched in the fall of 2002. The 36-credit graduate program is offered in cohort style and a student can expect to finish this accelerated program in as little as 18 months.  Classes are conducted either in an 8-hour Saturday format or in a 4-hour format on two weekday evenings.

The Master of Science in Organizational Leadership was launched in January 2005.  It is a values-based leadership studies program that provides a context for enhancing leadership and organizational effectiveness.  The 36-credit graduate program is offered in cohort style and students can expect to finish this accelerated program in as little as 12 months, attending class two nights a week.

The first education degree at Nyack was the Childhood Education major offered in 1970 (then called Elementary Education).  In 1989 Adolescent Education (then called Secondary Education) was approved.  TESOL was added in 1997 and the School of Education was established in 2003.  Teacher candidates engage in experiential learning full-time in the 1-12 classroom on at least two different grade levels.  Over 100 hours of field experience is distributed across the education curriculum to insure a secure link between classroom knowledge and teaching in schools.  The School of Education's unique blend of suburban and urban provides an additional distinguishing feature for interested future teachers.   The education programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).  The School of Education is a member and accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) for teacher certification.  The Childhood Education programs are nationally recognized by the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) and Math Education by the National Council for the Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).   The Adolescent English program is nationally recognized by the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE) and TESOL program by Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).


The MS in Education was launched in the fall of 2002.  The Master of Science in Education is offered in cohort style to meet the demands of working adults.  Students can expect to finish the 36-credit program coursework in 10-12 months, committing to attend classes one night a week for 4 hours and every other Saturday for 6.5 hours.  The three available Master of Science degree programs are:  Childhood Education—Grades 1-6, Special Education—Grades 1-6, and Inclusive Education—Gifted extension, grades 5-6 or grades 7-9 extension.

The Social Work major was first introduced in 2001.  The School of Human Services was established in 2008.

The 66-credit Master of Arts in Counseling Program began in 1999.  It is designed to academically prepare students for the role of a professional counselor able to work effectively in private practice, within clinics, and with local evangelical churches.  The 67-credit Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy began in 2008.  The program aims to equip students with the adequate tools to incorporate therapeutic technique skills to work with family systems in a professional yet warm environment.  Both programs meet National Board of Certified Counselors academic requirements for the National Counselor Exam, which is used as the test for licensure in over 40 states.

The Division of Music was created in the 1930’s.  In 1945 the school was authorized to grant the Sacred Music degree.  In 1962, Nyack was welcomed as a member of the National Association of Schools of Music.  Nyack was the first “Bible college” to be so recognized.  By 1963, the college was authorized to confer the MusB. Degree.  The School of Music was established in 2003; its various degree programs are founded on the study of classical music, from its earliest beginnings to its most contemporary forms. Music for worship is also woven through the curriculum and there are also opportunities to be part of contemporary worship through various student-led vocal and instrumental groups on campus. Location in the New York Metropolitan area enables students to attend outstanding performances at many well-known venues.

Alliance Theological Seminary is an evangelical seminary committed to preparing servants of Jesus Christ through a variety of educational, hands-on ministry and personal formation experiences.  ATS was founded in 1960 as a graduate program of Nyack College.  ATS first began offering the Master of Professional Studies degree in 1974 and the Master of Divinity program was initiated in 1979.  Tracks offered under the 93-credit Master of Divinity include Bible and Theology, Church Development, Missions, or Urban Ministries.  The 54-credit Master of Arts is offered in Biblical Literature with Old Testament and New Testament emphases.  The 48-credit Master of Arts is offered in Intercultural Studies.  The Master of Professional Studies offers a 48-credit program with professional development tracks in African-American Ministries, Church Development, Counseling, Chinese Ministries, Hispanic Ministries, Korean Ministries, and Urban Ministries.  The Doctor of Ministry will be offered beginning fall 2009.  ATS classes are held in Nyack NY, New York City NY, Kiev Ukraine, and Puerto Rico.  Alliance Theological Seminary is accredited by  the Association of Theological Schools in the US and Canada.
