Division of Academic Support Services Overview
HEOP (Higher Education Opportunity Program)
This program is designed for NYS students who come from households with modest incomes. These students have potential for success at Nyack College, but their high school performance and/or test scores understate their potential.
Initiated in the Spring of 1975, the Higher Education Opportunity Program at Nyack College is administered by the Division of Academic Support Services. The program has established a record of success at the institution and is regarded as an integral part of the college.

Through the years, HEOP students have held many campus leadership positions. They have served as student government officers, class presidents, club presidents, resident assistants, and baccalaureate speakers. They have been named to the Dean's List, have received awards and scholarships for academic achievement, have earned faculty citations for community service, have been inducted into honor societies, and have graduated with honors. Every year HEOP students travel to such countries as England, Israel, Korea, Japan, Kenya, and the Philippines.

NIA (Nyack’s Introduction to Academia)
The purpose of the NIA program is to foster the adjustment of new students as well as existing students to the college environment through the provision of counseling and referral services. The overall goal is to assist a targeted student population with successful matriculation to Nyack College. To fulfill its mission, NIA provides programs and services that prepare students for admission to the university and, once enrolled, provides academic support services to ensure that NIA students successfully complete their undergraduate education and acquire the skills that make them competitive for graduate and professional schools. To ensure the success of one's college education, NIA provides a variety of support services that include academic advisement counseling, personal development and career counseling, free tutorial and supplemental instruction. Individual counseling is provided on a regularly scheduled basis throughout your college years.

Academic Success & Writing & Research Center
The Academic Success and Writing and Research Center’s Mission

To promote the skills and knowledge necessary for academic success in college and beyond through intentional programming in the following areas:
  • Peer Tutoring (Individual & Group)
  • Supplemental Instruction
  • Learning Theory
  • Academic Skills Counseling
  • Academic Mentoring and Writing and Research
The Academic Success and Writing and Research Center’s Philosophy

It is the philosophy of The Academic Success and Writing and Research Center that students struggle not because of a lack of inherent intelligence, but because of a lack of academic skills and discipline.  These skills can be learned, discipline can be developed, and together they can open the door to academic success and improved self-esteem.

The Academic Success and Writing and Research Center’s Program goals
  • To provide learners with support and instruction, which enhance their academic experience, learning potential, and personal development
  • To better the student’s perception of his or her goals and achievements
  • To establish an environment that encourages the development of learning skills and builds students’ self confidence and self-esteem
  • To promote those skills and independent study behaviors necessary for academic success
  • To provide support services and resources for faculty members, as they seek to meet the needs of their students
  • To establish a process for the evaluation of all aspects of the program
The center is focusing on developing its programs to provide quality service and to best respond to the needs of our ever-changing school body.

Disabilities Support Services
This office exists to assist students with various disabilities in achieving equal access to academic, social, spiritual and cultural programs offered on campus.  Based on current and comprehensive documentation from a qualified practitioner, we will support students’ requests for reasonable accommodations that will help them to optimize the learning experience.

It is the policy and practice of Nyack College to comply with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and state and local laws regarding students with disabilities. Under these laws, no disabled, but otherwise qualified student shall be denied access to, or participation in services, programs and activities at Nyack College.

Nyack College is committed to the student as a whole person, and believes that each student has infinite value to God. Nyack College desires that all students that we serve realize their full potential and recognize the unique value of others. In this spirit, we provide reasonable accommodations to disabled students to help optimize their learning experience, while encouraging them to develop and maintain independence.

All communications between students and Disabilities Support Services staff are confidential, as is any supporting documentation maintained on file.
